Manila taps GCash to disburse scholarship aid
The city government of Manila signed an agreement with Globe Telecom to provide WiFi and financial services in the city.
Globe Telecom agreed to provide fast and reliable internet connectivity in key areas with GoWiFi and deliver financial technology services to the city’s scholars through the use of GCash.
Manila Mayor Francisco Isko Moreno Domagoso signed a memorandum of agreement with officials of Globe Telecom on Wednesday afternoon that will make GoWifi available at the Manila City Hall, Ospital ng Maynila, Tondo Medical Center, Gat Andres Bonifacio Memorial Medical Center, Tondo High School, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila and Universidad de Manila.
The MOA also covered the use of Gcash as the official financial services platform to send allowances and other monetary benefits to around 15,000 scholars for capital’s public senior high school, especially in Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM) and Universidad de Manila (UdM)
Students will also receive a corresponding Gcash Mastercard to withdraw their monthly allowance that will also serve as their official identification card as bonafide scholarship beneficiaries of the city.
The P1,000-monthly allowance for college students and P500-monthly allowance will be disbursed through the card starting next year.
Domagoso said the government of Manila is slowly adopting the use of new technology.
“This move will have an effect in the city in terms if efficiency of delivery of services using technology,” he said.
Globe President and CEO Ernest Cu said the collaboration with the nation’s capital was the first step in contributing to Manila’s digital transformation initiatives.
“When you have access to information, you transform the lives of people. The next phase of transformation is financial inclusion,” he said during the signing of MOA.
“There are many opportunities in the education sector. Teachers are still in the manual system. Digitizing cafeterias is very possible. We can bring our home WiFi units to libraries so if students cannot afford to buy it, they can borrow it like a book,” Cu said.
Cu also said that he could not wait to see what Manila would look like after three years.
“I think Manila will soon be the best-connected city because the council has removed all the impediments to the construction of cell sites so these will be built faster here,” he said.
He also vowed to improve the Globe network in the city to enable its digitalization.
“We need to build additional 100 wireless sites to improve the signal in Manila, he said.
GoWifi is accessible to 2,500 sites nationwide particularly in high-traffic areas like malls, hospitals, and schools providing accessible internet connection.
Meanwhile, GCash has made financial transactions easier for its 20 million registered users with 70,000 partner merchants in the country.
Last July 31, Domagoso signed Ordinance No. 8568 which mandates the city government to grant a P1,000 monthly monetary allowance for qualified students of the PLM and UdM.
