Vitas Slaughterhouse in a state of despair

Tondo slaughterhouse rehabilitation looms

Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso on Wednesday vowed to rehabilitate the Vitas Slaughter House in Tondo.

During an inspection early Wednesday, Domagoso said the Tondo slaughterhouse was in a state of despair, lamenting the fact that it did not even have a sewage treatment plant and proper cleaning equipment.

“I will not allow this. I cannot tolerate this,” Domagoso said.

To guarantee the cleanliness and health of animals and people in the area, the mayor said he planned to build four new buildings, which would include a poultry dressing area, a house compound for residents, an administration city compound and animal clinic, and a pen for cattle and hogs.

“We will try to come up with a new slaughterhouse, with in-city vertical housing. It’s going to be community development that will rise and become operational by next year,” Domagoso said.

He said he would propose regulations to secure the safety and quality of the meat coming from the slaughterhouse.

“You cannot take this sitting down, because what we are after is the people of Manila who will buy meat in the wet market,” the mayor said.
